Thanks to the ambitious goals of the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement—an agreement which emphasizes the shared responsibility of federal and state governments to save the Bay—we've seen meaningful progress in restoring the health of the Bay and improving water quality in rivers and streams across the region, including right here in Richmond.
The James River, once one of the most polluted waterways in the nation, is showing real signs of recovery. But significant challenges remain. Many of the rivers and streams that feed into the Bay, including those in and around the Richmond area, are still impaired and vulnerable.
A new chapter is now beginning. The revised Bay Agreement—set to guide us beyond 2025—marks a critical opportunity to recommit to the vision of clean, swimmable, and fishable waters for all. But it's not just about extending deadlines. This new agreement shifts our approach to focus more intentionally on measurable outcomes that benefit local communities, advance equity, and improve life for both people and wildlife.
Join the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on July 29 for a panel discussion exploring how this renewed commitment to clean water will shape the future of the James River, our neighborhoods, and our local waterways. Hear from elected leaders, Bay Program partners, and community advocates about what this new agreement means for Richmond—and how local action will drive regional progress.
The panel of speakers will include:
Stefanie Taillon | Virginia Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources
Anna Killius | Chesapeake Bay Commission | Executive Director
Jasmine Gore | Chesapeake Bay Program Local Government Advisory Committee | Committee Member
Dr. Charles Gowan | Randolph-Macon College, Biology Department and Environmental Studies Program | Professor
Clean water has no finish line. Together, we can ensure a healthier, more resilient future for the Bay, the James, and generations to come.
