Cool the City Tree Giveaway — Reserve Your Free Tree!

  • Liberation Church 5501 Midlothian Turnpike Richmond, VA, 23224 United States (map)

Southside ReLeaf is giving away up to 200 free trees to City of Richmond residents on Saturday, April 25, 2026, as part of our Cool the City campaign to reduce extreme heat in the city’s hottest neighborhoods.

By planting trees at your residence or business, you can help cool your block, improve air quality, reduce flooding, and make your neighborhood healthier and more resilient.

What?

Help cool and green your neighborhood by planting a free tree at home. Each household may reserve up to two trees.

Trees will be provided in either 2-gallon or 3-gallon pots. Two-gallon trees are typically between 10 inches and 2.5 feet tall, while three-gallon trees are typically between 1 and 3 feet tall.

When?

Saturday, April 25. Trees will be available for pick-up between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Delivery and planting assistance (available upon request) will also be provided during this time.

Where?

The giveaway will be hosted in the parking lot of Liberation Church.

Who?

Because this giveaway is part of a broader effort to address the urban heat island effect, priority will be given to residents living in the following Richmond zip codes: 23224, 23225, and 23234. Any Richmond resident can complete the registration form to request a free tree. If we still have trees available after meeting the needs of our priority zip codes, we will allocate them to other zip codes in Richmond.

How?

Trees should be picked up in person during the event. A limited number of trees may be available for walk-ups, but reserving in advance is strongly encouraged.

For neighbors with limited mobility or transportation access, Southside ReLeaf will coordinate delivery and/or planting assistance through our volunteer network. We ask that residents who are able to pick up their trees refrain from requesting delivery so that we can prioritize those with the greatest need.

About “Cool the City”

This event is part of Cool the City, a collaborative campaign to create greener and healthier futures in Richmond’s neighborhoods that need it the most. We are planting trees, building tomorrow’s workforce, and increasing capacity for the City of Richmond and its nonprofit partners to deliver lasting change.

Funding for this project is provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, in partnership with the City of Richmond. This (or these) institution(s) is an equal opportunity provider.
