Tree Ambassador Program

The Tree Ambassador Program (TAP) is a free volunteer training initiative by Southside ReLeaf, designed to empower community members with the knowledge and skills to advocate for young trees and support greener neighborhoods. Explore the information on this page to learn more about TAP.

Become a Tree Ambassador with Southside ReLeaf

As a Tree Ambassador, you'll learn how to plant and care for trees, recognize when a tree needs water or fresh mulch, and understand your role in promoting sustainable, climate-resilient practices in your community. You'll become a confident advocate and environmental steward who:

  • Helps maintain planting sites, community gardens, and other greenspaces in the Southside.

  • Identifies areas that can benefit from trees and additional care.

  • Represents community interests for a healthier, greener Richmond.

At Southside ReLeaf, we’re committed to environmental justice and believe that trees and green spaces can transform communities. By joining the Tree Ambassador Program, you're not just planting trees—you're planting hope, equity, and resilience in the Southside.

Get trained. Get involved. Grow your impact.

TAP Programming

TAP is a two-day training, consisting of classroom and in-the-field sessions. We’ve designed the program to make it accessible for all levels, with multiple opportunities for hands-on learning throughout the year. TAP is also a great stepping stone to more comprehensive arbor care training, like joining the Richmond Tree Stewards.

Topics Covered in TAP:

  • Urban forestry

  • Health impacts of urban greening

  • How to plant a tree 101

  • Advocating for young trees

  • Tools used in greening work

  • Safety best practices

Tree Ambassador training may be for you if:

  • You care about the environment and want to take action in your neighborhood.
