Connecting Neighbors Through Outdoor Learning Classrooms

Southside ReLeaf’s Outdoor Learning Classrooms bring neighbors together in parks and green spaces across South Richmond to explore local history, urban forestry, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship. Designed as accessible, community-centered learning experiences, these gatherings create opportunities for residents of all ages to connect with nature, learn from local experts, and discuss how communities can respond to environmental challenges together.
Since 2024, Southside ReLeaf has hosted Outdoor Learning Classrooms at Bellemeade Park, Swansboro, and Ernest Road Park in partnership with community organizations, civic associations, faith leaders, researchers, and environmental educators. Topics have included greening and advocacy in faith communities, neighborhood tree canopy efforts, habitat restoration, and urban forest ecology. In both 2025 and 2026, Southside ReLeaf celebrated International Day of Forests with programming at Ernest Road Park, and in 2026, provided Spanish interpretation to make the event more accessible to Spanish-speaking neighbors. Both events were recognized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization as part of its global celebration of the International Day of Forests.
