Policy & Advocacy

Environmental inequities are shaped by policy decisions — from where trees are planted and protected, to how development happens, to which communities receive investment and support. Southside ReLeaf works to advance policies that promote environmental justice, climate resilience, healthy neighborhoods, and equitable access to green space.

Our advocacy work is rooted in community experience and informed by the realities Southside residents face every day. We engage in local and statewide policy efforts, coalition work, public education, and community-driven campaigns to help shape a healthier and more equitable future for Richmond and communities across Virginia.

State Policy

Southside ReLeaf engages in statewide policy and advocacy efforts focused on environmental justice, urban and community forestry, climate resilience, equitable development, and public health.

Our state policy work includes tracking legislation during Virginia’s General Assembly session, participating in statewide coalitions and advisory groups, and advocating for policies and investments that strengthen communities and expand environmental protections across the Commonwealth.

Local Policy

Local decisions directly affect neighborhood health, environmental conditions, housing stability, and access to green space. Southside ReLeaf works to advance policies and planning efforts within the City of Richmond that support environmental justice, community resilience, and equitable investment in historically underserved neighborhoods.

Our local advocacy includes engagement around zoning and code changes, Richmond’s annual budget process, infrastructure planning, and coalition-based community advocacy efforts.

Campaigns & Calls to Action

Our campaigns create opportunities for community members to take action on urgent environmental justice and community issues. From public comment opportunities and petitions to advocacy toolkits and educational resources, these campaigns help connect residents with ways to influence decisions that affect their neighborhoods.
