Tree canopy coverage is a vital asset to urban areas, fostering healthier, safer, and more connected communities. From cleaning our air and filtering our water, to slowing down storm surge and flooding in our cities, trees also provide shade that can cool neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees, helping to prevent heat-related deaths and illnesses in urban areas that suffer from the heat island effect. Green spaces and park settings are also linked to better health outcomes, as they reduce stress-related mental health issues and improve overall health development in children, while encouraging physical activity.
Join the City of Richmond's Parks & Rec for a morning of community tree care! We will be maintaining young trees in the Swansboro / Broad Rock neighborhoods on Southside. Not only will these trees help beautify the area and create a habitat for birds and other local wildlife, but once they reach maturity, they will also provide shade and cool down the temperatures in an area frequented by park visitors and playground users.
Tools and gloves will be provided; however, you are also welcome to bring gloves if preferred. Sturdy closed-toed shoes/boots are required. No prior experience or special skills necessary.
