Do you love trees and want to make a lasting impact on Richmond's urban forest? The Richmond Tree Stewards' annual training course is your opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience to become an advocate for healthier neighborhoods and a greener city.
Richmond Tree Stewards is a volunteer organization dedicated to protecting, planting, and caring for trees throughout the Richmond region. Working alongside city staff, nonprofit organizations, and community volunteers, Tree Stewards help maintain the city's tree canopy through activities like tree planting, pruning, invasive species removal, public education, and community outreach.
Course Details
This course will occur over 10 weeks this fall. The dates include:
September 9, 17, 24
October 1, 8, 15, 22, 26, 29
November 2, 5, 12
Classes will take place in the evenings after 5 pm. Information about class times and location will be shared upon your acceptance into the course.
Course Fees & Scholarships
A $160 fee will be due at the first training session. Southside ReLeaf will provide up to four scholarships to cover the course fee, with preference given to residents of zip codes 23224, 23225, and 23234. Residents can request a scholarship by emailing Sarah at sarah@southsidereleaf.org.
What You’ll Learn
The 10-week training course combines classroom instruction with hands-on field experiences led by experienced Tree Stewards and tree care professionals. Participants will explore topics including:
Tree biology and physiology
Tree identification
Choosing the right tree for the right place
Proper tree planting techniques
Tree pruning concepts and hands-on pruning practice
Invasive species identification and management
Richmond's urban forestry initiatives and community tree projects
The course also includes a required weekend pruning lab, optional field trips, and opportunities to connect with others who are passionate about improving Richmond's urban forest.
Course Requirements
To become a Certified Richmond Tree Steward, participants must:
Attend (or make up) all training sessions
Complete the required pruning lab
Finish the required volunteer service hours following the course to gain practical, hands-on experience
Certified Tree Stewards can maintain their certification through ongoing volunteer service and continuing education.
